Design Principles:

Shapes & Proportions

Our presentation defines and gives examples of shapes and proportions and how they can be used to create an effective and aesthetically appealing design.

We have defined a shape as an area that stands out from the area around it based on defined boundaries with differences in color, texture, or value. We present two different types of shapes: mechanical and organic. Mechanical shapes are also known as geometric shapes, and can be drawn using a ruler or compass and produces a feeling of control or order. In contrast, organic shapes are freehand drawn complex shapes that are normally found in nature. They produce a natural feeling.

Proportions, also known as “scale”, is the use of the relative sizes of elements to create attraction or focal points. Proportions can be used to show realistic comparisons between the relative sizes of objects, or used to show drama by portraying objects as larger than life.
